Governor Babatunde Fashola approved the new
resumption date at a stakeholders’ forum held
Sunday, at Lagos Television Blue Roof, Agindigbi,
Ikeja. The forum was attended by headteachers and
principals of schools in the state.
According to the governor, the shift in date is to
allow for adequate distribution of Ebola preventive
materials in schools across the state.
Due to the Ebola Virus outbreak in Nigeria, the
Federal government had postponed the resumption
of schools nationwide in a bid to avoid the further
spread of the epidemic.
Government had also moved the resumption to
Monday, September 22 following an intervention
that the virus had been contained in the country.
Nollywood star actress Genevieve Nnaji say’s
she is yet to get married because she yet to see

A 46 year old man, Donald Dale Hackman Jr.,
is facing felony charges for beating up a
woman and lighting a fire on her vagina,
police report. Hackman Jr., , of Lititz, is
charged with arson, two counts of aggravated
assault, three counts of simple assault and
false imprisonment.
Officers were called to the Heart of Lancaster
Hospital on Friday evening for a report of a
woman who had been burned as a result of
an assault.
According to police, the 43-year-old woman
and her 7-year-old child had been staying
with Hackman at his apartment along East
Main Street for the past month. The
investigation revealed that Hackman had been
beating the woman over the course of several
days, authorities said. During one of the
assaults, the woman told police Hackman
poured lighter fuel on her genital area and lit
her on fire. She suffered second and third-
degree burns over her stomach, genital area
and inner thighs, police said.
She was treated a local hospital and then
transferred to the Leigh Valley Hospital Burn
Center. The victim told investigators that
Hackman also locked her child in a closet for
20 minutes after he acted out when Hackman
beat her, police said. Hackman was arrested
and taken to Lancaster County Prison in lieu
of $500,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.

News reports have it that the former military head of
state, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, is
incapacitated and has been hospitalised in
Germany.
The former dictator was in his hilltop mansion in
Minna, Niger State, until 10 days ago, when he was
reportedly bundled to Germany, after falling ill.
Babangida is reportedly suffering from a chronic
back ailment.
It is also believed that he had undergone a previous
surgery for the same problem, a while back, in
Germany.

Members of the Lagos-based Synagogue Church of
All Nation, SCOAN, may soon be heading for other
churches, as there are indications that the State
government may shutdown the church over the last
Friday’s incident.
DailyPost recalls that a six-storey building owned
by the church collapsed last week and trapped over
80 persons to death and left others with various
degrees on injuries.
Albeit, investigations into the disaster are still
ongoing, but the Lagos State Government claimed
that the General overseer of the church, Prophet TB
Joshua, failed to obtain approval for the building,
therefore the addition of more floors to the existing
two-storey building was unlawful.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban
Development, Olutoyin Ayinde, while commiserating
with the victims of the incident, said the government
was currently conducting a preliminary
investigation into the possible cause(s) of the
collapse and that the findings would be made
known in no distant time.
Ayinde said a team of engineers from the Ministry
and other state government agencies were taking
samples from the foundation and materials from
the wreckage of the building for detailed analysis.
He added that if there was any violation of relevant
planning laws, government would take appropriate
action but would not shut down the church until
investigations were concluded.
On the claims made by the church that a ‘strange’
aircraft must have being the possible cause of the
collapse, Ayinde said the Ministry had submitted
the video clips, as provided by the Church to the
Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) with the
coordinate of the collapsed site for investigation and
professional comment.
On his own part, Chairman of the Lagos State House
of Assembly Committee on the Environment, Tobun
Abiodun, said some government officials must have
been influenced to have allowed the church
construct the collapsed building illegally which
had led to the death of its worshipers.
“But my concern is that we have town planning
officers that should supervise buildings in the state,
they are accomplices. There is no way someone
would build a six-storey building instead of four
and they would say they were not aware. I believe
that they compromised standard”, he said

The Man who was responsible for the explosion is currently in police custody. According to An Eye witness, The man normally filled the chemicals into gas cylinders, hid them in the bush and probably sold the chemicals in these gas cylinders. After Checking the chemicals, it was ascertained that the chemical was one of the chemicals used in manufacturing bombs (such as the Cannon or "Ogbunigwe" as called by the igbo's) during the Nigerian Civil War. The suspect was transferring the toxic chemicals into the gas cylinders when one of the cylinders broke. On knowing the kind of danger that the chemical could cause, The suspect allegedly took to his heels but was lynched by some youths who wanted to beat him up but later called others to the scene of the explosion and subsequently handed the suspect to the police. The area was also said to have been inspected by health workers after the chemical totally destroyed trees and vegetation around . Those who sustained injuries due to the explosion were taken to an undisclosed hospital. Beware of auto-mechanic and car wash centres
across the country, a bomb might just have been
planted there.
This warning came in the aftermath of the
heavy casualties inflicted on Boko Haram
insurgents in recent weeks, as indications
emerged that the group is recruiting auto-
mechanic and car wash operators across the
country to use their centres as loading bays to
plant Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) on
vehicles of unsuspecting members of the public to
cause havoc.
According to military sources, the objective is to
hit at some top government establishments and
functionaries as well as military and police
locations in other parts of the country outside
the North East, epicentre of the insurgency, to
divert attention from the increasingly successful
onslaught on the group in recent days.
Boko Haram group had therefore infiltrated the
ranks of many of the operators and bought
them over with mouth-watering sums of money
to look the other way when the explosives were
being planted on the vehicles, the sources told
Vanguard.
According to the source, the terrorists, knowing
that many vehicle owners hardly find time to
spend with their mechanics or car wash
operators, have concluded the plot to fix
improvised explosive devices on such vehicles
while they are with the mechanic or cash wash.
“When the unsuspecting owner of the car comes
to carry his or her car, he will drive off with an
explosives laden car that has been programmed
to explode within minutes or an hour as the case
maybe and in the process, be killed by the
explosion, the source said.
A signal confirming this development and
addressed to all military formations in the
country said: “Boko Haram infiltrates auto-
mechanic and car wash centres.”
It said the group was planning to use vehicles of
unsuspecting members of the public, especially
prominent persons and top functionaries as
bomb carriers.
Targets of such dastardly plots, according to the
signal, are official government quarters, military
barracks and public centres.
The military therefore urged the public, vehicles
owners and users to be vigilant and watchful,
especially when giving and collecting their
vehicles from auto-mechanic and car wash
centres.
A group in Bayelsa Sate, Civil Liberties
Organisation (CLO), has described as “double
standard” and “a national disservice,” the
death sentence passed on 12 soldiers of the 7th
Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri,
Borno State, who were found guilty of mutiny
. The group therefore called on the military
authority to review the sentence or face a
coordinated protest from civil society groups and
the entire people of the six geo-political zones of
the country.
In a statement by its Chairman, Chief Nengi
James, the CLO said “though the Nigerian Army
has once again shown its posture and
intolerance for acts of indiscipline by its officers
and men, the death sentence pronounced
against the 12 soldiers over alleged mutiny and
insubordination was a disservice to the nation
at this time of security challenges.”
It noted that the controversy trailing the
retirement of the former General Officer
Commanding, GOC, Major General Abubakar
Mohammed was a further provocation to the
troops and the purportedly convicted soldiers.
“The action of the military authority lacks better
judgment and a poor signal to the remaining
troops at the war front against the Boko Haram
insurgents.”
The Senate Committee on Defence and Army has
invited the National Security Adviser and the
military top brass over the $9.3m cash seized by
the South African government.
Chairman of the committee, Senator George
Sekibo, said this in an interview with reporters in
Abuja, on Thursday.
Those invited include Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.);
Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Badeh,
and Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah, over
the alleged $9.3m controversial arms procurement
deal.
Media reports from South Africa on Monday
indicated that authorities there arrested two
Nigerians and an Israeli with the undeclared
huge sum of cash, flown in a private jet from
Abuja.
Sekibo said the nation’s top military brass were
expected to appear before the Senate committee on
Tuesday next week to brief the lawmakers on the

He said, “I have just called the Chief of Defence
Staff, National Security Adviser and Chief of

because we have not heard details about it, but
they will be here on Tuesday next week”.
While commenting on the just concluded

not surprised by the outcome.
Sekibo said as soldiers, the convicts were fully
aware of the implication of mutiny, adding
that before the judgment was passed, the army
carried out its investigations before the
commencement of the trial.
He further explained that soldiers were trained to
kill, therefore killing was not a big deal to them.

nearly choking his wife to death because she

The man’s name is Desmond Brownlee and he is
45-years-old, he has been charged with domestic
battery by strangulation and tampering with a
witness at his home in Deltona early Monday
morning, according to a Volusia County police

Police said Desmond allegedly pushed his wife,
punched her multiple times in the face, and
then wrapped his hands around her neck and
nearly choked her to death, according to the
police report.
His wife said she would have suffocated if she

immediately called 911, but Desmond snatched
the phone and said he wasn’t going to allow
her to get the police involved, according to the

Brownlee’s home, Desmond Brownlee tried to
secretly tell the victim ( his wife), “Shhh, what do
you want, us both to go to jail?” The argument
started to become physical after Desmond
became angered that most of the fried chicken
was gone and also over the care of his wife’s
mother.
The couple has a young daughter and has been
married for over four years, and their daughter
was in her room sleep when the incident took
place. Desmond Brownlee was thrown in Volusia
County Jail Monday, but is no longer inside,
according to the jail.
Nigeria plummeted four places in the new Fifa

the collapse.
South Africa’s High Commissioner to Nigeria,
Lulu Mnguni, however said 17 of his compatriots
were unaccounted for and the church had set up
a hotline in Johannesburg for concerned
relatives.
“It (the death toll) can’t all be South Africans,”
he told AFP. “There were also Nigerians who were
working. Two children were pulled alive from the
collapsed building but both their mother and
father were among the missing,” he added.
“They were under the rubble together with their
father. Their father kept them talking to each
other,” he said.
T.B. Joshua inspires an almost fanatical

the world, who are drawn to his services by
claims of miracle-working and prophecies. But
rescue workers have complained of a lack of
cooperation from Joshua and the church
authorities, which included preventing the
emergency services from accessing the site until

Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said
SCOAN officials had not disclosed the identities
and nationalities of those in the building at the
time.
Joshua rejected the lack of cooperation claims as
“inaccurate”. “Contrary to this, we want to
categorically state that the church has provided
assistance when and where required and
continues to do so: good Christians are good
citizens,” he said.
Engineers have suggested that the addition of
extra floors on top of the existing building for
foreign followers of the Pentecostal church
overloaded the structure, causing the fatal
collapse. On Wednesday, the Lagos State
government ordered urgent structural checks of
all buildings on the SCOAN site while NEMA
said that rescue operations could wind up on
Thursday. In South Africa, Zuma rejected
criticism that his government was slow to
respond to the tragedy.
Joshua, whose followers include heads of state
and top-level politicians such as Malawi’s former
president Joyce Banda, again suggested that a
low-flying aircraft may have been to blame.
“This incident was preceded by the appearance
of a strange aircraft which flew very low over the
building four times and then disappeared,” he
stated.
“The church views this tragedy as part of an
attack on The Synagogue Church Of All Nations
and in particular Prophet TB Joshua.“In due
course, God will reveal the perpetrators of this
unfortunate tragedy.”

not even the case for most of us. If you go around the room and ask a handful of people how to memorize
things quickly, most of them will probably tell you repetition.
That is so far from the truth, it’s running for office. If you want to memorize something quickly and
thoroughly, repetition won’t cut it; however, recalling something will. The problem is that recalling
something requires learning, and we all learn in different ways. Below are some universal steps to mastering
the art of recalling so that you can start memorizing a ton of data in a short amount of time.
Before we start, you need to establish something: are you an auditory, visual, or experiential learner? If
you’re an auditory learner, then the most effective way for you to grasp information is by hearing it. As you
can imagine, visual learners favor seeing something in order to learn it, and experiential learning types are
more akin to learning from events and experiences (or, doing something with the material). Most of us are a
combination of at least two of these categories, but I will denote which step is most favorable to your most
agreeable learning style so that you can start to memorize things quickly and efficiently.
Step 1: Preparation
To optimize your memorization session, pay close attention to which environment you choose. For most
people, this means choosing an area with few distractions, though some people do thrive off of learning in
public areas. Figure out what is most conducive to your learning so that you can get started.
Next, start drinking some tea. I could link you to mounds of scientific studies that confirm green tea as a
natural catalyst for improving memory. Mechanically speaking, our ability to recall information comes down
to the strength between neurons in our mind, which are connected by synapses. The more you exercise the
synapse (repetition), the stronger it is, resulting in the ability to memorize.
As we get older, toxic chemicals will damage our neurons and synapses, leading to memory loss and even
Alzheimer’s. Green tea contains compounds , however, that block this toxicity and keep your brain cells
working properly a lot longer.
Step 2: Record What You’re Memorizing
This is especially useful if you’re trying to memorize information from a lecture. Use a tape recorder to track
all of the acquired facts being spoken and listen to it. If you’re trying to memorize a speech, record yourself
reading the speech aloud and listen to yourself speaking. Obviously, this is most helpful for auditory
learners, but it’s also handy because it ensures that you’re getting more context from a lecture that will help
you learn the information faster.
Step 3: Write Everything Down
Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and re-write the information. This will help
you become more familiar with what you’re trying to memorize. Doing this while listening to your tape
recorder can also help you retain a lot of the data. This is most useful for experiential learners.
Step 4: Section your notes.
Now that you have everything written down in one set of notes, separate them into sections. This is ideal for
visual learners, especially if you use color coding to differentiate between subjects. This will help you break
everything down and start compartmentalizing the information being recorded in your brain.
Step 5: Apply repetition to cumulative memorization
For each line of text, repeat it a few times and try to recall it without looking. As you memorize each set of
text, be cumulative by adding the new information to what you’ve just learned. This will keep everything
within your short-term memory from fading. Keep doing this until you have memorized that section and you
are able to recall the entire thing. Do not move on to another section until you have memorized that one
completely. This is mostly visual learning, but if you are speaking aloud, then you are also applying auditory.
Step 6: Write it down from memory
Now that you can recall entire sections, write everything down from memory. This will reinforce everything
you just have just learned by applying it experientially.
Step 7: Teach it to someone (or yourself)
The most effective method for me when I was in school was to teach the information to someone else. You
can do this in a variety of ways. You can lecture the knowledge to someone sitting right in front of you (or
the mirror, if you can’t convince anyone to sit through it) and explain everything extemporaneously. If what
you’ve learned needs to be recited verbatim, then do this in front of someone as well in order to get a feel
for what it will be like to recite the text to the intended audience.
My favorite method for this is creating tests for other people. Take the information and predict what
questions will come out of them. Use multiple choice, matching and so on to present the data in test format,
and see how someone else does. All of this is experiential learning, since you are actually practicing and
manipulating the concepts you’ve learned.
Step 8: Listen to the recordings continuously
While doing unrelated tasks like laundry or driving, go over the information again by listening to your tape
recordings. This is certainly auditory learning, but it will still supplement everything you’ve shoved into your
short-term memory.
Step 9: Take a break
Finally, let your mind breathe. Go for a short time without thinking about what you just learned and come
back to it later on. You’ll find out what you really know, of course, and this will help you focus on the
sections you might be weakest at.
1. Leave the past in the past
When you meet someone new, leave any negative
feelings or past heartbreaks just where they should be—
in the past.
2. You won’t meet someone new in your living room
Well, maybe a cute guy will deliver your new sofa, but
chances are you’re going to meet someone by getting out
there and trying new things—online dating, taking a
class, etc. Tell everyone, especially your married friends,
that you’re looking to meet someone and ALWAYS go to
parties. Because you truly never know who you’ll meet.
3. Give the guy a chance
When you were 20 your list was “he must be tall, dark
and handsome.” Try going against type. It just might
be a perfect fit.
4. Look at blind dates like a first date
Two of the authors of our book met their husbands on
blind dates, and you can too! If you’re not sure you
want to sit in a noisy restaurant, go out and do
something fun. One of our Garter Brides went to a
baseball game, and she and her date each brought a
friend. They had a blast and got married one year
later.
5. Time is on your side
Take your time in getting to know your guy and don’t
feel in a rush to meet his children or have him meet
yours. It starts with the two of you. Make sure this is
someone you want in your life.
6. Isn’t it romantic?
Just because you’re meeting the love of your life later in
life doesn’t mean you can’t still have passionate,
amazing sex! The Garter Brides say “Go for it!”
7. Someone to come home to
When you’re ready to move in together you will discover
how wonderful it is to come home to the one you love. Be
prepared for some give and take—for example, over
which of each others’ belongings stay or go.
8. What’s up with a pre-nup?
Remember that a pre-nup isn’t because you think your
marriage isn’t going to work—it’s so you get to decide
how your assets and everything you’ve worked for can
be protected.

Latest reports indicate that the Nigerian
Army have sentenced at least 15 soldiers to
four years jail term for refusing to report to
the war front in the northern parts of
Adamawa State.
It was gathered that the soldiers had for the past
three weeks facing court-martial since they
allegedly commit the offence.
According to a report published by AIT online,
the sentencing of the officers carried out by the
Nigerian military command was done on
Wednesday, 18 September, 2014, at the 23rd
Armoured Brigade, in Yola , Adamawa State.
It was gathered that the Court Martial found the
15 soldiers guilty of insubordination, dereliction
to duty and refusal to undertake order assigned
to them in the war against the Boko Haram
insurgents in the North East part of the country.
This is barely two days after the Nigerian Army
sentenced 12 of its personnel to death by firing
squad after they staged a mutiny and attacked
the GOC, 3 Division in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking on the matter, a top military source
said the affected soldiers were those who ran
away when Boko Haram struck their duty posts
and fled back to the cantonment.
“In the military tradition, a soldier is expected
to obey the last order but the 15 soldiers
convicted by the military command were
adjudged to have committed acts of
insubordination by their refusal to draft to the
warfront.” the unnamed source stated.
The source maintained that the decision of the
military is intended to reinforce sanity and
discipline in the Nigerian Army.
“The military has been grappling with soldiers
deserting from their tour of duty only to re-
surface with all manner of tales, and the
development is gradually beginning to impugn
on the integrity of the military
establishment,” he added.
It would be recalled that Lagos lawyer, Femi
Falana (SAN) had few days ago called on the
Nigerian military authority not to confirm the
death sentence passed on 12 soldiers for mutiny
and other offences.
Falana advised that the death sentence instead
should be commuted to imprisonment in the
interest of Justice.
As at the time of compiling this report, it is not
yet known if the 15 soldiers would be pardoned.
Using a USB socket, a four-cell AA battery holder, four
rechargable AA batteries, and a four-AA battery
charger, you can have a portable 5-volt power supply
for charging or powering your Ipod or other USB-
powered device.
Don't put non-rechargable batteries in the holder
though, because you will wind up with 6 volts
instead of five. The USB socket is supposed to supply
five volts.
One nice thing about this setup is that the batteries
stick together as a set of four. They get drained
together, and they get charged together. Also there are
no complicated circuits.
STEP 1: Buy a battery holder, batteries, and a
charger
You will need a battery holder made for four AA
batteries, with red and black wires coming from it.
Radio shack sells these just like in the picture. Most
likely, your local Hobby Store carries them too, and
then you don't have to go corporate. Radio shark also
sell a type which has an on/off switch, and a cover
which is held shut by a screw. I don't recommend
that type. You don't need a switch and you don't
want to be thwarted by a screw every time you need
to charge the batteries.
You can usually find a battery charger at a thrift
store or in the free box at a college dorm building.
Often times the charger is missing its power cord,
and you can just match it up and be on your way.
Buying a charger would be silly with all the free
ones out there, ready to go in the trash because
nobody wants them.
Most chargers charge as two sets of two (one LED for
two batteries) but some charge all four cells as
individuals (one LED for each battery). Those are
better. Everyone deserves to be treated as an
individual.
You can get rechargable batteries in a set of four.
Cheap ones are 1500mAh, expensive new ones are
almost 3000mAh. Get whatever is handy, and
upgrade if you need to. Don't mix batteries that
weren't born together, they will end up beating each
other up. I am serious.
This handy mobile bug or cell phone detector, pocket-
size mobile transmission detector or sniffer can sense
the presence of an activated mobile cellphone from a
distance of one and-a-half metres. So it can be used
to prevent use of mobile phones in examination
halls, confidential rooms, etc. It is also useful for
detecting the use of mobile phone for spying and
unauthorised video transmission.
The circuit can detect both the incoming and
outgoing calls, SMS and video transmission even if
the mobile phone is kept in the silent mode. The
moment the bug detects RF transmission signal from
an activated mobile phone, it starts sounding a beep
alarm and the LED blinks. The alarm continues
until the signal transmission ceases.
An ordinary RF detector using tuned LC circuits is not
suitable for detecting signals in the GHz frequency
band used in mobile phones. The transmission
frequency of mobile phones ranges from 0.9 to 3 GHz
with a wavelength of 3.3 to 10 cm. So a circuit
detecting gigahertz signals is required for a mobile
bug.
Here the circuit uses a 0.22μF disk capacitor (C3) to
capture the RF signals from the mobile phone. The
lead length of the capacitor is fixed as 18 mm with a
spacing of 8 mm between the leads to get the desired
frequency. The disk capacitor along with the leads
acts as a small gigahertz loop antenna to collect the
RF signals from the mobile phone.
Op-amp IC CA3130 (IC1) is used in the circuit as a
current-to-voltage converter with capacitor C3
connected between its inverting and non-inverting
inputs. It is a CMOS version using gate-protected p-
channel MOSFET transistors in the input to provide
very high input impedance, very low input current
and very high speed of performance. The output
CMOS transistor is capable of swinging the output
voltage to within 10 mV of either supply voltage
terminal.
Capacitor C3 in conjunction with the lead
inductance acts as a transmission line that
intercepts the signals from the mobile phone. This
capacitor creates a field, stores energy and transfers
the stored energy in the form of minute current to the
inputs of IC1. This will upset the balanced input of
IC1 and convert the current into the corresponding
output voltage.
Capacitor C4 along with high-value resistor R1 keeps
the non-inverting input stable for easy swing of the
output to high state. Resistor R2 provides the
discharge path for capacitor C4. Feedback resistor R3
makes the inverting input high when the output
becomes high. Capacitor C5 (47pF) is connected across
‘strobe’ (pin 8) and ‘null’ inputs (pin 1) of IC1 for
phase compensation and gain control to optimise the
frequency response.
When the cell phone detector signal is detected by C3,
the output of IC1 becomes high and low alternately
according to the frequency of the signal as indicated
by LED1. This triggers monostable timer IC2 through
capacitor C7. Capacitor C6 maintains the base bias
of transistor T1 for fast switching action. The low-
value timing components R6 and C9 produce very
short time delay to avoid audio nuisance.
Assemble the cell phone detector circuit on a general
purpose PCB as compact as possible and enclose in a
small box like junk mobile case. As mentioned
earlier, capacitor C3 should have a lead length of 18
mm with lead spacing of 8 mm. Carefully solder the
capacitor in standing position with equal spacing of
the leads. The response can be optimised by
trimming the lead length of C3 for the desired
frequency. You may use a short telescopic type
antenna.
Use the miniature 12V battery of a remote control and
a small buzzer to make the gadget pocket-size. The
unit will give the warning indication if someone uses
mobile phone within a radius of 1.5 meters.
President Goodluck Jonathanhas declared that
Nigeria is free of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease
which has claimed seven lives in the past weeks.
Jonathan addressing State House journalists in
Abuja yesterday said nobody has Ebola in the
country at the moment.
He said all those who hitherto had the symptoms of
the virus had recovered.
Jonathan, however, noted that the possibility of
recording the Ebola in Nigeria again could not be
ruled out as long as it continued to ravage Liberia,
Sierra Leone and Guinea.
He said the likelihood that someone like Liberian-
American Patrick Sawyer who imported the virus to
Nigeria in July could also not be foreclosed,
according to report from Daily Trust “Presently, there
is no case of Ebola in Nigeria.
Nobody in Nigeria has Ebola now. All the people
that had the symptoms of Ebola have recovered.
Out of 19, we lost seven and the others have
recovered. Yes, there are few people we are observing.
“That’s not to say we may not record Ebola again
as long as Ebola is still in the West Coast, it is there
in Guinea Conakry, it is there in Liberia, it is there
in Sierra Leone.
The likelihood that the character like the Late
Sawyer can come in one way or the other is also
open”, he said.
He said the government had so properly protected the
nation’s airports that “if Sawyer were to arrive
Nigeria now, no Nigerian would have contracted
Ebola because of the level of preparation…We are
sure that even if one mad Sawyer comes again,
nobody will contract Ebola.
Thanking all Nigerians for managing the virus,
Jonathan affirmed that the entire country had come
together in fighting the epidemic.
“This is one thing that the whole country came
together, worked together.
There was no issue of politics, there was no issue of
religion, and there was no issue of ethnicity. In fact,
that was why we were able to contain it.
If Nigerians did not agree, we wouldn’t have
succeeded”, he said. Jonathan also thanked all the
governors, especially those of Lagos and Rivers
States, for working with the federal government and
setting up machinery to manage Ebola.
On the September 22 schools’ resumption date,
Jonathan pleaded with the Nigerian Union of
Teachers to shelve plans to embark on strike, asking
them to commend and work with his government.
He said the NUT had no reason to threaten strike
over Ebola as the decision to reopen schools on
September 22 was taken at a meeting with state
governors.
According to him, if the government closes
institutions because of Ebola, foreign envoys in
Nigeria would send dispatches to their countries
about it and that could aggravate the
stigmatization against Nigerians going there.

This, was announced by Mr Olisa Metuh, the
party`s National Publicity Secretary, in Abuja.
The party spokesman also said that the
primaries for the National Assembly would hold
on Nov. 22, adding that the dates were proposed
by the party`s National Working Committee
(NWC).
According to him, the dates were proposals that
were subject to the approval of the party`s
National Executive Committee (NEC) scheduled to
meet on Sept. 18.
“We expect all public servants, government
appointees and elected party officials who are
interested in contesting any position to resign
their appointments seven days before the
commencement of the ward congress election”, he

President Goodluck Jonathan has given reasons
why nursery, primary and secondary schools should
resume on September 22, while also begging the
Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) not to embark on
strike over the resumption date.
Addressing the State House correspondents at the
Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, September 16,
Jonathan said the country had successfully
managed the outbreak of Ebola and there is
presently no case to keep school children at home
unnecessarily, Punch reports.
The president explained that the continued stay of
school children at home would send the wrong
signals to the international community about the
Ebola situation in Nigeria. Jonathan said:
“Our athletes were segregated in China, they had to
returned to the country. A place like China asked
Ministers of the Federal Republic to show prove of
Ebola free certificate, very discouraging. And what
people don’t know is that as long as you close your
institutions because of Ebola, the ambassadors that
are here with us and the high commissioners send
what you call dispatches to their home states about
what is happening in our country monthly.
“As long as we Nigerians close all our public
institutions because of Ebola, the dispatch that goes
to the whole world is that Ebola is a problem in
Nigeria. And as long as we declare that Ebola is a
problem in Nigeria, any Nigerian that travels out
will be treated as someone that has Ebola.
“We have been able to manage Ebola and the whole
world is happy with us and we must tell the whole
world that we have managed Ebola and no
Nigerian should be segregated because of Ebola. If
we still have Ebola definitely we will not open any
of our institutions but we don’t have Ebola.”
He said rather than embark on strike, the NUT
should commend government on its handling of the
outbreak of the Ebola disease.
President Jonathan gave the assurance that
measures had been put in place to avert the
importation of the disease into the country as in the
case of the late Patrick Sawyer (the index case) who
brought from Liberia into Nigeria.
It would be recalled that the Federal government’s
directive for nursery, primary and secondary schools
to resume on September 22, 2014 had sparked
controversy in various quarters.
Nigerian doctors were opposed to the resumption
date, saying all schools should not resume until all
those who are under surveillance for the Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) in the country had been certified free.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) even directed
its members to ignore the September 22, resumption
date as directed by the Federal government.
