» »Unlabelled » Ways I Think Corruption Can Be Stopped In Nigeria

In Nigeria, The alarming rate of corruption is rapidly increasing . This calls for severe actions and anti corruption policies to be put in place. Nigerians should be wondering what the so called national conference has added to the development of this country. It is therefore right for the
citizens to choose the best anti corruption policies to be taken by their representatives.
It is quite unfortunate that corrupt leaders are capitalising on the fact that Nigerians are
peace loving people to carry out fraudulent transactions. If Nigerians took to the streets
like citizens Middle-Eastern countries and became violent ,These leaders would sit up and
do their jobs properly. A comprehensive review of the Nigerian Constitution should be carried out
and the proper amendments made

Below i will outline the best measures to stop corruption in Nigeria

REMOVAL OF IMMUNITY CLAUSE FROM ERRING STATE EXECUTIVES

The misconduct of most governors is getting so much that many Nigerians are wondering
if the constitution needs to  be amended , I must say that removing Immunity clause would
help reduce corruption drastically,in the sense that it exposes the governor to civil and criminal prosecution while in office.
The specification that it should strip immunity clause from erring
governors only is to avoid unnecessary interference with the actions of state governors.Under the current constitution, The President and State Executives Are  immune from indictment while in office. The reason behind this can be easily explained- Indicting an incumbent governor or president would interfere with the executive's capacity and its ability  to perform  its constitutionally assigned functions and thus would be inconsistent with the present constitutional structure. However there is certainly no good reason to leave a dormant governor to keep stealing at the expense of the poor masses. Therefore any legally elected executive of a state should be stripped of immunity once he is found wanting. The best way to monitor the actions of governors is the appointment of a six or seven-man comittee that its constitutional duty would be to go on a tour of every state in the federation and report the state of things to the predident. This commitee would go on an impromptu visit to the states in order to prevent the state governor of the state they are visiting from being aware of their presence.

ELECTED OFFICIALS SHOULD PRESENT PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF DECLARATION OF ASSETS

Most Nigerian Lawmakers who carry out these corrupt practices and are not indicted because there declaration of assets
has already been planned and forged with no physical proof. A typical Nigerian Lawmaker who plans to steal 100 million while
in office would declare the value of his assets as 105 million naira, this is in order to avoid being probed when he leaves office.
In a setting where he does not show physical proof off those assets, and he is believed.

INDICTED OFFICIALS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM ALL POLITICAL PARTIES/PLACED ON A JAIL TERM NOT LESS THAN 16 YEARS

Any Individual who is found to be carrying out fraudulent and corrupt actions while in office should be banned from associating with
any political party . This includes banning the official from entering any constitutionally elected official's office or lodge. If he fails to comply
with the above rules, he should be sent to jail. In Nigeria, There are claims that anti corruption policies are in place but the court of law still
shows mercy to these men who should be locked up behind bars for trying to make profit at the expense of the poor masses. It is laughable to
say that in Nigeria,A man who may steal 100 million, may be asked to bail himself with 300,000 and a surety which is not even up to what he stole
this is caused by the lack of independence of the judiciary

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE ELECTED BY FELLOW LAWYERS NOT APPOINTED BY THE EXECUTIVE ARM OF GOVERNMENT

This act practically hinders the full function of the judiciary as an independent institution. The judiciary works hand in hand with the legislative and the
executive arm of government .In a situation where the individuals in charge of the executive and legislative arm of government are elected by the masses
the head of the judiciary should not be selected by the executive because this makes it hard for the judiciary to check the errors of the judiciary.
Due to the fact that most people are not aware of the judges who are incorruptible, in this democratic system of government , lawyers should vote the
person whom they feel is good enough to take charge of the supreme court

PARENTS SHOULD TEACH THEIR CHILDREN GOOD MORALS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW

It is always good to try to fix a problem from the source. Parents should try as much as possible to make to give their children
a good moral upbringing and a very good foundation .

The message i have for my fellow Nigerian youths is simple and straightfoward,''Until Nigerian Youths Step Forward And Take What Rightfully Belongs To
Them , Nigeria would remain corrupt. I rest my case.
